Star_Trek_ongoing_issue_9_cover_AExploring the Star Trek Universe through comics. Spanning four decades reviewing the newest stories & those from the comic archives.

Welcome to Issue 10 of the Holodeck. This week we have as our special guest, regular follower of the show Captain Hot Dogg aka Dave. Michael and Dave continue the review of the IDW ongoing Star Trek comic looking at the two part story: “The Return of the Archons”.

In this retelling of the original story we find out what happened to the Starship Archon which was lost for over hundred years. We also discover that there is something strange going on at Starfleet command who seem to be quite concerned by the actions of Kirk.

Our Thoughts: While this is a retelling of the classic original episode it feels fresh and in fact is more like an original story. The story moves at a great pace with some wonderfully drawn fight scenes. Some great interactions between Kirk & McCoy while we felt those with Spock felt forced. The art again is good however, there are some inconsistencies. There are some great backgrounds including those of the Archon.

The Final Verdict: Overall, although this is a retelling of the classic episode it manages to stand on its own in terms of story & art .

Our Thoughts: The story moves at a fast pace as we try to understand exactly what Starfleet are up to! Does this have anything to do with Into Darkness? Only time will tell. The background story of the Archon & Landru is very interesting. The art we feel is not as strong as it could be, some of the likenesses (i.e. Pike) don’t quite hit home however, the backgrounds are amazing including those in the briefing room.

The Final Verdict: Overall, although this is a retelling of the classic episode it manages to stand on its own in terms of story & art .
