To celebrate the release of Star Trek Into Darkness, movie and TV streaming service blinkbox worked with top illusionist Scott Penrose to perform some cunning teleportation trickery.
LONDON, 10 September 2013: In a video released today, shoppers look on in awe at what appears to be the world’s first successful attempt at teleportation.
In fact, the dramatic spectacle was a stunt by top illusionist Scott Penrose and movie and TV streaming service blinkbox to celebrate the release of the new Star Trek movie Star Trek Into Darkness.
The teleportation trickery was achieved using a combination of science and illusion. It caused a stir among thousands of shoppers who witnessed ‘volunteers’ from the crowd step into a high-tech unit and appear to have been ‘beamed’ to nearby locations in seconds.
Unbeknownst to the shoppers in London’s Westfield shopping centre in Stratford, each person who stepped inside the device had an identical twin. Through clever lighting and magic the first twin appeared to be beamed away, while the second twin appeared in the distance moments later looking dazed and confused.
Ben Ayers from blinkbox comments: “Star Trek Into Darkness is one of the biggest releases of the year. We wanted to mark its arrival with an audacious spectacle straight out of the franchise itself – human teleportation. Since Star Trek first hit our screens, the idea of being able to teleport from one place to another, although it is not scientifically possible, has captured the public imagination.”
The latest instalment of the popular franchise is available on the blinkbox movie streaming service over a year ahead of Netflix and Lovefilm Instant priced from £3.49 to rent and £10.99 to buy.
