Star Trek: First Frontier tells the untold story of Captain Robert April and the first launching of the starship U.S.S. Enterprise, NCC-1701. Kenny Smith has set up a Kickstarter to help fund the project.

Here are the details from the Kickstarter page.

Hi. My name is Kenny Smith. Ten years ago, I wrote a rough draft for a Star Trek film I wanted to direct. The title was Star Trek: First Frontier and it was the story of the first launching of the USS Enterprise, NCC-1701 under the command of Captain Robert April. All Star Trek fans know the stories of Captain Kirk and his crew, but many may not be aware that the Enterprise was 15 years old when Kirk took command, having served her first five-year mission under Captain April and then two consecutive five-year missions under Captain Christopher Pike. I wanted to tell the story of her first mission, to see her being built in spacedock, along with the fleet of twelve sister ships in Earth orbit and to watch her launch for the first time towards indescribable adventure.

I really wanted to watch this film and patiently waited until the time was right to get it onto the screen. Recently, at one of my conventions, I met a film producer who was looking for a project to work on. We became friends and I decided to mention my Trek idea to him. He loved it. Knowing that the fiftieth anniversary was quickly approaching, we set to work on the script. The time has finally come.

They hope to raise $130,000 to help with production expenses. They currently have $9,396 and have 44 days remaining of the project.

Their release date is set for September 2016 which marks the 50th anniversary of Star Trek.
