Microsoft have revealed a new real-time translation tool for Skype which allows users to chat without learning a new language. The tool translates speech instantly, providing both text and spoken translations.
At the moment Skype have limited the service to English and Spanish conversations, but instant messaging supports more than 40 languages. The feature is currently in preview mode for Windows 8.1 and you can sign up to use the beta version of Skype Translator now on their website
Microsoft recently previewed Skype Translator to two elementary school classes—one in Washington and one in Mexico City. The video below shows what happened.
Skype Translator relies on machine learning, which means that the more the technology is used, the smarter it gets, Microsoft’s Gurdeep Pall wrote in a blog post.
We are starting with English and Spanish, and as more people use the Skype Translator preview with these languages, the quality will continually improve.
