The two-part “Parallel Lives” in issue #29 gives readers a chance to take a tour with the finest crew in the fleet while seeing them in an all-new light.
The all-new Five Year Mission of the Enterprise continues as Captain Jane Tiberia Kirk and her crew encounter a never-before-seen enemy in deep space! Wait…Jane Kirk? What’s going on?! All will be revealed in the first chapter of this new two-part story overseen by Star Trek writer/producer Roberto Orci!
Writer Mike Johnson told Star Trek.com, “The story originated from a conversation I had with our Trek editor supreme, Sarah Gaydos. We wanted a story that would grab readers’ attention with an unusual hook but would also feel very Trek. Sarah suggested the “genderswap” idea, as we called it, and Bob Orci embraced it as the kind of unique story the comics are great for. It’s in the tradition of the more unusual Trek ideas like the Mirror Universe and the Tribbles, but we are not playing it as a gimmick. We have fun with it, but hopefully, we’re also telling a meaningful story.”
Artist Yasmin Liang told Comics Alliance that when she approaches “redesigns and genderbends”, she always tries to “determine the main motivations and personality behind the character”.
“For instance, Bones as a woman would be just as grouchy and still be taller than Kirk. I just like the idea of Bones being a large, mean-looking woman! And of course, Chekov would be cute as a button,” she said. “It’s not really a science though and I’ve done my fair share of genderbends for fun. People get MAD about genderbends. Have you seen how angry they get? I’m actually a bit afraid for when the books are released and people read them.”
The Guardian Newspaper also have an article about the comic. Eric Cone our reviewer for Visionary Trek, also get’s his review mentioned in the Guardian’s article.
The second part of “Parallel Lives” is scheduled to come out on the 12th February.
